Over 1,600 undocumented migrants detained across Turkey

Via Hürriyet Daily News-  A total of 1,632 undocumented migrants were detained across Turkey on Jan. 2, according to military figures.

Border troops detained a total of 1,556 migrants from Syria trying to illegally cross into Turkey, as well as five from Greece and two from Iran, according to the Turkish General Staff website. Turkey has been a main route for refugees trying to cross into Europe since the Syrian civil war begun.

Sixty-four migrants were also caught while trying to illegally enter Greece from Turkey, while five others were held at the Syrian border attempting to enter Syria.

257 undocumented migrants held across Turkey

Via Anadolu Agency* – At least 98 undocumented migrants were held by security forces across Turkey on Wednesday, according to officials.

More than 500 undocumented migrants captured across Turkey

Via Hurriyet Daily News – At least 547 undocumented migrants have been caught trying to reach Europe or enter Turkey illegally across the country, security officials said on Nov. 16.

AA: “Turkey-Syria border wall to be completed by end of September”

Via Hurriyet Daily News* – The construction of a concrete barrier along hundreds of kilometers of Turkey’s border with Syria is expected to be completed by the end of September, a Turkish official told state-run Anadolu Agency on Sept. 22.

Refugees at heightened risk of refoulement under Turkey’s state of emergency

Amnesty International published a short report about deportations and forceful ‘voluntary returns’ to Syria: 

Amnesty International is concerned that Turkey has become an even less safe space for refugees and asylum-seekers since the coup attempt on 15 July 2016. Syrians crossing into Syria from Turkey for Eid al-Adha

Via NTV – Already 30.000 Syrians who want to spend Eid al-Adha (Sacrifice Feast) in their homecountry already crossed into Syria from Turkey’s border gate in Kilis.

Asylum seekers who want to go back to Syria for a short period of time and then turn back, need the permission of the governor. A total of 47.322 Syrians applied to leave the country for the Sacrifice Feast, already 30.000 left. Long queues are already forming at the 7 control points at the Syrian-Turkish border.

975 people intercepted trying to illegally enter Turkey

Daily Sabah reports that the Turkish Land Forces intercepted 975 people who tried to cross into Turkey on Monday: “The Turkish Armed Forces said in a statement that 926 people from Syria, 28 from Bulgaria, 18 from Greece and three people from Iraq, as well as 50 people trying to enter Syria from Turkish land, were captured.” Continue reading 975 people intercepted trying to illegally enter Turkey

Turkey arrests troops who beat Syrian refugees on video

Via Middle Eastern Eye – The Turkish army has arrested a group of soldiers who were filmed beating and verbally abusing a group of young Syrian refugees who attempted to illegally cross the border, it said late on Sunday.  In a statement posted on its website, the army said that “the personnel in question were taken into custody and all administrative and judicial procedures have been immediately started against them”.
