Syrian Kindergarden Teacher jailed in Turkey

Via Rami Jarrah – Zena Mukayed, an English teacher who taught at a kinder garden in Istanbul was detained on the 10th of February 2017 by Turkish security forces, she was renewing her residence permit when the incident took place and was transferred to a foreigners detention facility with no reasons presented around her detainment to this date.

Turkey deports foreigners working with Syrian refugees

Via Washington Post – The Turkish government this week deported foreigners working with Syrian refugees at a leading U.S.-based aid organization, part of what appears to be an ongoing crackdown on international humanitarian groups there.

The four foreigners — from Britain, Ireland, Indonesia and India — were among 15 employees of the International Medical Corps (IMC) detained since April 20 by Turkish police in Gaziantep, the southern Turkish city where many organizations aiding millions of Syrian refugees in Turkey are based. The other 11 — all Syrians — remain in a detention camp, according to an IMC statement.

A violinist unable to pass visa barriers drowned in the Aegean Sea: He was found hugging his violin box

Via Gazete Manifesto  (Translation from Turkish) – This week, another boat carrying refugees drowned in the Aegean between Sivrice Burnu (Çanakkale) and Lesvos. 16 people died and only two people survived the shipwreck, they are now on the island of Lesvos.

On board of the ship was also a young Turkish violinist – Barış Yazgı, 22 years old, born in Siirt – who wanted to go to Belgium – where his brother lives – to study music. His dead body was found hugging a violin box. Inside his violin box he carried his instrument as well as handwritten compositions.

Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Top 43,000 in 2017; Deaths: 1089

Via IOM* – IOM Greece reported Monday the deaths and disappearances of 23 migrants or refugees over the weekend off the island of Lesvos in waters between Greece and Turkey. Hellenic authorities reported finding the remains of nine people while Turkish officials reported finding the remains of seven others. There were two survivors and indications of at least seven more people missing. One of the survivors was an expectant mother who was taken to a local hospital. Shipwreck off Lesvos: 12 persons feared dead

Via Ekathimerini  – At least eight people, including a child, drowned when an inflatable boat carrying refugees and migrants sank off Greece’s Lesvos island, the Greek coastguard said on Monday.

The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said the number of dead was at least 12. Citing survivors, it said 25 people were on board. Two survivors, one of whom is pregnant, were taken to the island’s main hospital, the coastguard said.

Italian journalist Del Grande released from detention in Turkey

Via Kom News – Gabriele Del Grande, an Italian journalist detained by Turkish authorities since 10 April, was released on Monday and is on his way back to Italy, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Angelino Alfano on Twitter. “Gabriele Del grande is free. I just talked to him, he is on his way back to Italy. I had the joy to inform his family. We are awaiting him,” Alfano said. Pre-detention jail in Kos almost full

Via Are You Syrious – After the massive deportation on the 20th April of 60 people from Kos to Turkey, the pre-detention jail has already filled up with about 35–40 new people. Of the 60 who were deported, 36 had not applied for asylum, despite the possibility to do so. Volunteers complain about the lack of information given to refugees about their right to apply for asylum and their right to receive visitors. Six solidarity groups for refugees in Kos held their first meeting this Saturday and discussed how to provide legal support and medical help.
