Via Rami Jarrah – Zena Mukayed, an English teacher who taught at a kinder garden in Istanbul was detained on the 10th of February 2017 by Turkish security forces, she was renewing her residence permit when the incident took place and was transferred to a foreigners detention facility with no reasons presented around her detainment to this date.

Those seeking clarification from the Turkish government on why Zena was taken in were told that Turkey is in a state of emergency and that by law the government is not obliged to provide any reasons for a period of 3 months.

Although the 3 month law in itself is outrageous and a total violation to human rights, another teacher; Ahmad Shamsi also a Syrian citizen who taught English at the Zirve university in Gaziantep was detained on the the 25th of January 2017, taking him into his 4th month, and has also received no reasons for his detention. The teacher along side two university students who were also detained without charges began a hunger strike on the 24th of April demanding their release.

Turkey’s state of emergency means that such human rights abuses somehow become acceptable, stripping a human being of their freedom whilst being kept in the total dark regarding why and what is to come.

A human being is innocent until proven guilty, it should never be the other way around.
